Acupuncture

Pinnacle offers acupuncture as a treatment option which can be used to complement other physiotherapy techniques. Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into the skin at specific points. These needles stimulate the nerves in skin and muscle to release your body’s natural painkillers – serotonin and endorphin.

Acupuncture is used in physiotherapy to improve function by increasing blood flow, increasing range of motion and decreasing pain. It can be effective at treating pain, both acute and chronic, associated with many conditions such as sciatica, tendonitis, repetitive strain injuries, neck and back pain, and much more. However, it can do more than just relieve pain. Many patients experience an overall improvement in their general well being.

Acupuncture is safe when administered by a well trained practitioner, using sterile needles. If administered properly, there are generally little to no adverse side effects. Some people may briefly feel a slight stinging sensation when the needle is inserted or may feel a dull ache around the needle, while others may feel nothing at all. Some people may also feel deep relaxation or mild disorientation following the treatment.

Your physiotherapist can advise you whether acupuncture is a viable treatment option for your condition.
